Gov. Bob McDonnell said Tuesday that he doesn’t support Virginia printing its own currency, an idea that Del. Bob Marshall, R-Prince William, wants the state to look at in case the Federal Reserve System breaks down.

It’s the federal government's job, not the state's, to print money, McDonnell said on his monthly call-in show on WNIS Norfolk, adding that talk of such proposals like Marshall's probably result from public concern about runaway levels of federal spending and debt.

It’s not the first time there’s been a split between McDonnell and Marshall, one of the General Assembly’s most conservative legislators.

In response to the federal repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ban on gays serving openly in the military, Marshall is planning to file a bill that would ban gays from openly serving in the Virginia National Guard. McDonnell, though he disagrees with Congress's decision to overturn the ban, expects the Guard to abide by guidelines from the Defense Department.
