Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell announced more appointments to his administration on Friday.
He appointed Major General Daniel E. Long as adjutant general of Virginia, supervising the National Guard.
Long commanded Task Force Care/Katrina in Louisiana and served as the deputy director and director of the Department of Defense Project and Contracting Office in Iraq from 2004 to 2005.
He will assume the duties from acting Adjutant General Wayne Wright on July 14. Wright will return to serve in his previous position as the chief of staff of the Air Guard.
McDonnell also appointed Gregory Whirley as commissioner of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
Whirley has served as the acting transportation commissioner since January. Before that, he served as chief deputy commissioner, acting chief financial officer and inspector general at VDOT.
