A man was killed in a collision between his motorcycle and a Calvert County Sheriff's Office cruiser, authorities said.
At 8:11 p.m. Wednesday, authorities responded to Broomes Island Road in the area of Mackall Road in St. Leonard, Md.
An investigation found that 31-year-old William David Hammer Jr. was operating a 2003 Kawasaki motorcycle when he lost control and began to slide, according to the Calvert County Sheriff's Office. He crossed the center line of Broomes Island Road, and the motorcycle struck the front end of the sheriff's office cruiser, which was traveling on the road in the opposite direction.
Hammer was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy. The sheriff's deputy driving the cruiser was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and has since been released.
This is the second fatal collision in the greater Washington area involving a law enforcement vehicle this week. On Monday, a man was killed when his vehicle crashed into a Fairfax County police cruiser.
