After shooting an 80 in the first round of stroke-play qualifying and a 66 in the second round, LaPlata’s Brent Martin has no idea what the expect day-to-day in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and Bryan Park Golf and Conference Center in Greensboro, N.C.
But on day one of match play, Martin survived with a 3 and 2 victory over Thomas Welk of Madison, Wis. Martin played 16 holes in 1-over-par, winning the last four holes to turn a 1-down deficit into a 3-up victory over the University of Wisconsin sophomore
Martin, a former player at Winthrop, will face Garrett Rank of Canada in the next round Thursday morning. Rank, a player at Ontario University, was a 5 and 4 winner over Cory Paladino on Wednesday, playing 14 holes in 2-over-par.
