LaPlata’s Brent Martin made an eagle and a birdie on consecutive holes on the back nine Thursday morning in the U.S. Amateur Public Links to grab the lead in his match with Canada’s Garrett Rank.

But the former Winthrop standout couldn’t continue his momentum as he lost three o the final four holes, falling 2 and 1, in the round of 32 at Bryan Park Golf and Conference Center in Greensboro, N.C.

With the exception of his two-hole run, Martin, 23, couldn’t better par on any other hole in the match. Rank fell in the following round.
