The Department of Defense says a Marine from Virginia has died in battle in Afghanistan.

Officials say 36-year-old Staff Sgt. Gregory Copes of Lynch Station died Aug. 17 while supporting combat operations in Farah province.

He was assigned to the 3rd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
