ELKTON, Md. (AP) — A North East man is being held without bond after police say he beat a stranger to death in front of shoppers at an Elkton grocery.

Forty-two-year-old Troy Kelly is charged with first-degree murder in the death Saturday of 55-year-old James Peirce of Elkton.

Police say the incident, which was captured on the store's surveillance video, took place about 5:50 p.m. in the Acme Market in Elkton. Officers say Kelly walked up behind Peirce, and punched and kicked him repeatedly.

When Peirce was knocked down, police say Kelly climbed on top of his and punched him several more times.

Officers say Kelly fled when a bystander intervened. Peirce was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
