Heading into the quarterfinals of the Virginia Amateur at Belle Haven, only one player remains from Northern Virginia. Mike Kirby (Falls Church), the No. 32 seeded player, registered upsets of medalist and 2009 runner-up Lanto Griffin (Blacksburg) in holes and of No. 16 seeded Brett Williams (Alexandria), 1 up.
The 25-year-old Kirby faces No. 9 Jeremy Wells (Hopewell) Friday morning.
Two-time defending champion Brinson Paolini (Virginia Beach) kept his hopes alive for an unprecedented third straight Virginia Am championship and will play Paul Woodson (Powhatan). The other match-ups are Seth Norman (Norfolk) versus Garland Green (Tazewell); and Matt Watson (Portsmouth) versus former champion Alan Barber (Yorktown).
Winners advance to the semifinals Friday afternoon. The 36-hole final is set for Saturday.
