JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Unemployment rates rose from June to July in 71 of Mississippi's 82 counties, according to figures released Wednesday. All counties remained below their jobless rates from last July, though.

Unemployment rates fell in July in eight counties: Clarke, Coahoma, Humphreys, Issaquena, Oktibbeha, Pontotoc, Tunica and Webster. Rates were flat in Newton, Perry and Wayne counties.

Rankin County's 6.1 percent remained the lowest jobless rate. Clay County's 18.9 percent remained highest.

County-level rates aren't adjusted to cancel out predictable seasonal changes. Students and teachers seeking summer work can increase unemployment.

Seasonally adjusted, the state's jobless rate rose to 9.1 percent in July from June's 8.8 percent. July 2011's rate was 10.9 percent.

The national unemployment rate hit 8.3 percent in July, above June's 8.2 percent but below July 2011's 9.1 percent.
