This weekend is the dreariest of the winter – the one between Championship Sunday and Super Bowl Sunday. So how about something completely different?
This Sunday, the Pocono Mountains will hold the 20th annual Ice Tee Golf Tournament on frozen Lake Wallenpaupack in Hawley, Pa.
Two nine-hole courses are created in the center of the lake, with Christmas tree-lined fairways, water traps, rough, and other obstacles. Holes are up to 130 yards long. Players are given colored golf balls and are allowed to use a putter and two other clubs.
The tournament, which drew more than 200 players the last time it was played, was created by local restaurant owners. Ehrhardt’s Waterfront Restaurant, overlooking the lake, will host an award ceremony and provide serve at an ice-carved bar.
Tee times run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. “Green fees” are $15 in advance, $20 the day of the tournament. Call 570-226-3191 or visit www.lakeregioncc.com.
In recent years, the Poconos has enjoyed a renaissance as a gaming and golf destination. The resort is home to 35 courses, including Golden Era designs by Donald Ross and A.W. Tillinghast, as well as award-winning Jack Frost National, the newest Poconos course.
