Hiring picked up in July in most of the 10 major U.S. industries tracked by the Labor Department. But recent hiring hasn't been enough to lower the unemployment rate, which edged up last month to 8.3 percent from 8.2 percent.

Manufacturing added 25,000 jobs, more than double the increase in June. That partly reflects fewer temporary layoffs by the auto industry. Most auto companies close their factories in July to retool their factories for new models. But with auto sales strong, some companies skipped the shutdowns, resulting in fewer layoffs.

Despite some signs of a recovery in housing, the construction industry still shed 1,000 jobs last month.
