Virginia Del. David Englin is pushing legislation to increase the penalty for illegally parking in handicapped spaces.

The bill would increase the maximum fine from $500 to $750, while the minimum fine of $100 would stay the same.

Englin told the Sun Gazette that he introduced the legislation at the urging of Alexandria officials. The city has been discussing ways to discourage handicapped parking violators, such as eliminating free parking for drivers displaying handicapped tags at metered spaces.
