Jill Stein, the Green Party's presidential nominee, seemingly surpassed Donald Trump in ad buys this week when her campaign announced the purchase of $575,000 in national television ads.

While outside groups like the National Rifle Association have reserved airtime for Trump, the Republican nominee's campaign has spent little on traditional ads.

Stein's campaign announced Friday that its three commercials will run during MSNBC's "Morning Joe" and "AM Joy" and on CNN, CBS and BET. The spots will also appear during "The Tonight Show."

The Green Party nominee said her campaign spent an additional $50,000 on social media promotion.

Stein is polling at roughly 4 percent nationally, according to the RealClearPolitics average. She has presented herself as a progressive alternative to Hillary Clinton, making a play for supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders who felt spurned by his loss in the Democratic primary.

Clinton and political action committees supportive of her campaign have purchased $98 million in ads set to run over the next several months in key states, while pro-Trump groups have reserved just $817,000 worth of airtime, according to NBC. None of that money appears to have come directly from the Republican nominee's campaign.

Trump relied heavily on earned media throughout the primary season, a strategy that has begun to backfire on him as the general election heats up. Much of the media attention he has received since the GOP convention has been negative, a pattern that is reflected in a recent spate of polls showing Clinton with a widening lead both nationally and in key battleground states.
