A leading GOP senator emphasized the need for Republicans to maintain their congressional majority to fix Obamacare, which he said is collapsing due to high prices.

Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said in the weekly GOP address that his home state recently announced major price hikes of up to 62 percent for 2017 Obamacare plans. He then pivoted to the need to maintain control of Congress no matter what happens with the presidential race in November.

"You know exactly what Democrats will do if they are in charge," Alexander said. "Democrats will spend more of your taxpayer dollars to prop up the collapsing Obamacare exchanges."

He said that Republicans have offered another option to provide "states more flexibility to give individuals and their families options to purchase lower-cost private health insurance plans outside of Obamacare."

Tennessee isn't the only state facing higher Obamacare premiums. A recent study by consulting firm Avalere found that prices for the silver plan, the middle tier of Obamacare plans, are expected to rise by more than 20 percent next year.

The move comes as Republicans are aiming to shore up down-ballot races due to worries about the unpopularity of presidential nominee Donald Trump. Alexander's address does not mention Trump nor his healthcare plans.

Trump has embraced parts of the congressional Republican health agenda, including letting consumers buy insurance plans across state lines and repealing all of Obamacare.
