A bill that has strong backing from Republican House members would block the District from using its own cash to fund abortions for low-income women.

Introduced by Rep. Chris Smith, Republican from New Jersey, the bill prevents federal funding of abortions. Since the District is still technically part of the federal government, the decision by its elected officials to fund abortions for low-income women will be blocked.

It's nothing new in D.C. The city only won the power to fund abortions in 2009 when President  Obama and the Democratic Congress lifted a long-imposed abortion funding ban.
