Metro ferried 582,286 rail trips on the Fourth of July, the lowest amount for the holiday since 2007.
The agency logged 631,206 trips last year and 598,898 in 2008.
The reduction in ridership came even as the Washington Nationals hosted a home game in addition to the usual festivities on the National Mall. Baseball games usually help drive up Metro ridership.
But the hot weather may have limited people’s desire to move. Furthermore, AAA Mid-Atlantic had predicted that more people planned to leave town by car, plane and bus than last year. And ridership overall has flagged in the past 12 months.
