A Mexican man who has been deported four times died Thursday night due to complications of pneumonia while in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody, the agency said late Friday.

Rafael Barcena-Padilla, 50, had been apprehended by Border Patrol agents March 1 when he was caught illegally entering the U.S. near Santa Teresa, New Mexico.

The illegal immigrant had been turned over to ICE for what would have been his fifth removal from the country. On March 16, Barcenas-Padilla was hospitalized at Del Sol Medical Center in El Paso, Texas for possible pneumonia, but never recovered.

Doctors reported Barcenas-Padilla's death at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time.

Federal authorities reported he had entered the country illegally at least four times since 1996. He also had a criminal record of petty theft, driving under the influence and possession of a controlled substance.

Barcenas-Padilla is the fourth ICE detainee to pass away in federal custody during the 2016 fiscal year.
