Former Virginia Del. Phillip Hamilton, who represented Newport News, has pleaded not guilty to bribery and extortion in connection with an alleged scheme to secure money for Old Dominon University in exchange for a job.

He was arraigned in U.S. District Court in Richmond Thursday, and his jury trial was set for April 25, the AP reports.

A federal grand jury indicted him on the charges last week. If convicted, Hamilton faces up to 20 years in prison on the extortion charge and up to 10 years on the bribery charge. He also would have to forfeit the $80,000 he was paid.
