Just shy of the 20th anniversary of signing the Fab Five, Steve Fisher is giving college basketball a better reason to remember him. Yes, that Steve Fisher has guided San Diego State to a perfect 19-0 record and out of the sea of major conference contenders to the No. 6 ranking in the nation and the presumptive nominee to become this year's Butler.
The Aztecs have been to the NCAA tournament three times in the past decade after Fisher took over a program in 1999 that went 17 seasons without a berth.
But Fisher always will be more famous for bringing Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson to Michigan together in 1991 and bringing the Wolverines to the brink of a national championship two years in a row.
The building of a program and buzz in San Diego has taken just a tad bit longer than the glamour run in An Arbor. But if the chips fall right over the next two months, Fisher's legacy might be even more enduring.
