The FBI disrupted numerous plots to kill Americans on or around July 4, Director James Comey said Thursday.
"I do believe that our work disrupted efforts to kill people, likely in connection with July 4th," Comey said, noting that FBI agents arrested more than 10 people in the last four to six weeks who had been inspired by the Islamic State. "Some" of those arrested were planning violence in connection with the July 4 holiday.
Comey described the suspects as "products of this ISIL online recruiting, directing, motivating effort."
Though Comey would not specify the numbers of arrests, he did say that not all charges were connected to terrorism. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security had put out a bulletin ahead of the holiday weekend warning law enforcement to be on alert for terror-related threats.
