The Fairfax School Board is scheduled to vote Thursday night on whether to close Clifton Elementary.

School Board officials for months have discussed closing Clifton in favor of building a new school roughly three miles away, though local parents and officials have lobbied hard to keep the institution they say is the centerpiece of local community life.

Fairfax County Public School staff recommended closing Clifton last month, but subsequent revelations about a potential asbestos threat on the grounds of the proposed new school site may have scuttled those plans.
