Beware, drivers on the Inner Loop of the Beltway: a portion of the major road will be reduced to a single lane for emergency repairs starting Friday night and running until Saturday morning.
Officials are reducing the Capital Beltway Interstate 95/495 South to one lane near Telegraph Road starting at 9 p.m. Friday and lasting until no later than 10 a.m. Saturday, Woodrow Wilson Bridge project officials said.
The two right lanes will be closed after the exit for Pershing Avenue/ Telegraph Road North until just before the Eisenhower Connector. The Telegraph Road ramps leading to it will also be closed.
The closures are due to potholes that formed between the right and center lanes, they said. But, no, the potholes aren’t due to the summer heat wave causing roads to buckle, as has happened elsewhere. Instead, increased summer traffic and age are to blame, officials said.
Officials predict the closure will cause major traffic tie-ups, especially Saturday morning. They urge drivers to avoid the area. Long-haul drivers heading south on Interstate 95 can take the northwest arc of the Capital Beltway across the American Legion Bridge.
