An 88-year-old man who was walking in a roadway was struck and killed by an off-duty Maryland State Police trooper.
State police said Buhrman K. Baird, of Hollywood in St. Mary's County, was walking on Mervell Dean Road near Beck Road in Hollywood at about 7 p.m. Wednesday when he was hit by Trooper First Class Wesley Goldston.
Police said 33-year-old Goldston was off-duty and driving a 2010 Jeep Laredo registered to the state police. Goldston, 15-year state police veteran, was not injured.
Goldston swerved to try to avoid hitting Baird, police said. Baird was wearing dark clothing and police said he had been pushing a lawnmower in the roadway, directly in the path of vehicles.
