The escalators leading into the Dupont Circle Metrorail station have faced problems for a while. But Monday was especially bad.

They broke down yet again, right at the end of the morning commute.

Then matters got worse for the evening commute. Smoke was reportedly coming from one of the escalators there around 5:40 p.m., according to D.C. Fire & EMS. No injuries were reported. But first responders weren’t able to clear the scene until about 6:20 p.m.

Metro had to close the Q Street entrance and was running shuttle buses due to the closure.
