A slice of downtown D.C. street is getting something this weekend that few other streets have: a tattoo.
The D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities commissioned artist Steed Taylor to paint a “road tattoo” on the 800 block on Vermont Avenue between H and I streets NW. Taylor and assistants are painting from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The public is invited to come watch or help paint.
The tattoo will be a Celtic knot design entitled “Daughters and Sons” and will commemorate D.C.’s wartime efforts. Taylor will paint the names of children of recently deceased military members in the knot during a ceremony Sunday at 1 p.m.
Taylor explained that his “road tattoos” use high gloss black paint, which isn’t noticed from all angles.
“It’s about the color of the road until it catches the light, then it really pops,” he said.
