EDUCATION: Doctorate in sociology from Northwestern University; master's and bachelor's degree in sociology from Iowa State.

EXPERIENCE: Penn State president from 1995-2011; chancellor, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 1991-95; provost and vice president for academic affairs, Oregon State University, 1986-91; professor of sociology and psychiatry, and vice provost for undergraduate studies, State University of New York at Stony Brook, 1982-86. Also had a previous stint teaching at Penn State from 1973-82.

FAMILY: Married, two children.

STATUS: Forced out as Penn State's longtime president by trustees after arrest of assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky on child sex abuse charges; remains a tenured faculty member. School-commissioned investigation found Spanier failed in his duties by not informing trustees about allegations against Sandusky. Has not been charged with any crime.
