Democratic organizers referred to the location of the Democratic National Convention by name, after apparent efforts to avoid identifying the event with Bank of America in previous messages to supporters.
“You have until midnight tonight to be entered to win airfare and accommodations for the 2012 Democratic National Convention,” writes Dr. Dan Murrey, executive director of the convention, in a fundraising email. “So, give $5 or whatever you can right now and, if you win, you will have the chance to meet President Obama on the night he accepts the Democratic Party’s nomination at Bank of America Stadium.”
In a fundraising pitch last month, former Al Gore aide Donna Brazile referred to the convention site as “Panthers Stadium” — the Carolina Panthers play at the stadium, as Politico noted, but that is not it’s name. The Charlotte Observer, in defense of Brazile, wrote that “that’s sometimes been its nickname.”
An email last week also omitted an acknowledgement of the big bank, by offering supporters a chance to get a “seat in the stadium and hear the President and Vice President’s speeches,” as Buzzfeed observed.
Here is Murrey’s full email:
You have until midnight tonight to be entered to win airfare and accommodations for the 2012 Democratic National Convention. So, give $5 or whatever you can right now and, if you win, you will have the chance to meet President Obama on the night he accepts the Democratic Party’s nomination at Bank of America Stadium. Your support will help make history. For the first time, a modern day convention is being funded by a grassroots network – made up of people just like you – giving what they can to make this event a success. When you give, you will be entered to win a chance to meet President Obama before his speech. You will be there as he gives his last convention speech as a candidate. You will be there as history happens. Your donation also helps ensure that this will be the most open and accessible convention in history. From CarolinaFest 2012 on Labor Day to Thursday night at Bank of America Stadium, we are giving more Americans than ever before the opportunity to experience the convention. This is your chance to be a part of it all. Your support matters. Give what you can today and be automatically entered to win a trip to Charlotte for this Convention. And when you do, you’ll also be entered to meet President Obama on Thursday, September 6th. Sincerely, Dr. Dan Murrey Charlotte in 2012 Executive Director
