RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Del. Kenneth Alexander is the Democratic nominee for the state Senate seat left vacant by the death last month of Sen. Yvonne Miller of Norfolk.
Alexander's nomination became official after no other Democrat met Wednesday's deadline to run for the 5th District seat that Miller held for 24 years.
Miller died of cancer July 3 at her Norfolk home, one day short of her 78th birthday.
She became the first black woman elected Virginia's General Assembly when she won a House of Delegates seat in 1981. Four years later, she accomplished the same milestone in the Senate.
A Sept. 4 special election will fill Miller's seat and that of Del. David Englin, D-Alexandria, who resigned after admitting an extramarital affair. Democrats will finalize a nominee for Englin's seat on Saturday.
