Emergency room visits related to underage alcohol consumption spiked last year during the Fourth of July, according to a study by the Drug Abuse Warning Network.
That study found the number of underage drinkers ending up in the ER each day during the 2008 Fourth of July Weekend was up 87 percent compared with a typical July day.
But calls to Washington-area hospitals Monday turned up no weekend spikes in the number of underage drinking casualties. Emergency room nurses in the District, Maryland and Virginia all voiced the same welcome message: The kids are all right.
