On this day, Jan. 27, in 1992, Mike Tyson went on trial in Indianapolis, accused of raping an 18-year-old beauty pageant contestant. At the time Tyson, 25, was one of the most recognizable athletes on the planet. "Iron Mike" was the undisputed heavyweight champion who became the youngest boxer to win the three heavyweight titles.
At the trial, teenager Desiree Washington testified that she went to Tyson's hotel room after a party. The boxer pinned her down on his bed and raped her despite her pleas to stop, she said. She ran out of the room and asked Tyson's chauffeur to drive her back to her hotel.
Tyson was convicted and sentenced six years in prison. He served three.
