The election law just passed in West Virginia would allow Rep. Shelley Moore Capito to run for a sixth term in the House and for the remainder of Sen. Robert Byrd’s term.
But that leaves Capito open to a challenge in her House district and to a distracted, divided campaign.
New Sen. Carte Goodwin was targeted by Democrats as a challenger to Capito in 2008, but declined the shot.
What better than weeks of positive press as the youngest senator to prime the pump for a challenge?
Both Capito and Goodwin will have to decide by weeks’ end.
