A federal grand jury has indicted a Pennsylvania man accused of smuggling cocaine in soup cans on drug trafficking charges.

Jose Acevedo, 41, was stopped at Washington Dulles International Airport in June after a customs canine smelled drugs. He was indicted Wednesday on charges of importing and possessing cocaine and conspiracy to import and distribute the drug.

Authorities say they found about 1.5 kilograms of cocaine hidden in 21 soup boxes. Avecedo told officials he was short on cash and running a courier service to Central America, according to an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in Alexandria in June. Avecedo said he didn’t know the soup packets contained cocaine.
