Hillary Clinton's chief strategist ripped Donald Trump on Tuesday for saying Clinton aide Huma Abedin's separation from her husband is evidence of the Democratic nominee's bad judgment.

Joel Benenson, the Clinton campaign strategist, called Trump's comments about Abedin's relationship status "outlandish" in an interview on CNN.

"He thinks everything is about him. His political opportunism, it shows why the man is temperamentally unfit to be president of the United States," Benenson said. He added that the public should allow Abedin to resolve the matter in private.

Soon after Abedin announced her separation from former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose sexual messages to other women were made public by a New York tabloid, Trump rushed out a statement on Monday praising Abedin's judgment and criticizing Clinton.

"I know Anthony Weiner well, and she will be far better off without him. I only worry for the country in that Hillary Clinton was careless and negligent in allowing Weiner to have such close proximity to highly classified information," Trump said in the statement.

"Who knows what he learned and who he told? It's just another example of Hillary Clinton's bad judgment. It is possible that our country and its security have been greatly compromised by this."
