Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson wants to put an end to career politicians in Congress by backing a constitutional amendment that would impose term limits on lawmakers.

In signing a term limits pledge Carson said, "We must encourage innovation and ingenuity to improve the state of our nation," adding, "Term limits create more opportunities for fresh ideas." The retired neurosurgeon has made his political inexperience a centerpiece of his campaign, often railing against career politicians.

Carson recently told the Washington Examiner that being a Washington outsider has played to his advantage.

According to Gallup's most recent survey, nearly 75 percent of respondents expressed support of congressional term limits, with little partisan disagreement. A measure that would set term limits on service in Congress has been introduced in both chambers by Sen. David Vitter, R-La., and Rep. Matt Salmon R-Ariz.
