Barking dogs helped a Fort Washington family escape from a fire late Wednesday, according to Prince George's County fire and emergency services.

Authorities said the blaze broke outo at a home on the 7200 block of LaVonda Court at about 11:30 p.m. A neighbor saw the flames when she went outside to see why her dogs were barking in the backyard. The woman saw smoke and fire on the roof of her next-door neighbor's home, and alerted the family.

The two adults and one child escaped from the home unharmed, fire officials said.

Heavy fire consumed the roof area and damages are estimated at $150,000.

One firefighter was hospitalized with second-degree burns from fighting the blaze. The firefighter was released from the hospital Thursday morning.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
