An Iraqi plane mistakenly dropped a bomb on an eastern Bagdad neighborhood Monday, killing at least five people and destroying several houses.
The Sukhoi jet was taking part in an airstrike against Islamic State militants, according to Iraqi television. One of the plane's bombs failed to detach during the mission and then accidentally fell onto the Ni'riya neighborhood as it was returning to base.
Some residents of the Ni'Riya neighborhood, which is in eastern Baghdad, said seven people died.
The Iraqi military, backed by Shi'ite Muslim Hashd Shaabi fighters on the ground and a U.S.-led air coalition, have been battling Islamic State militants for months in an effort to take back control of the west and north parts of Iraq.
