Commuters might have endured a bad commute Monday morning – water main shut down inner loop of the Capital Beltway, major delays on more than one Metro line, MARC train troubles? Take your pick.
But this is just the start of the week, folks, and more fun is expected.
The annual March for Life is taking place on Monday, which means closures and parking restrictions that will affect drivers and buses. Then on Tuesday, the hatches get battened down for President Obama’s State of the Union address.
Here’s what to expect:
Starting at 9 a.m. Monday, a Youth Rally and Mass for Life is occurring at the Verizon Center, then the protesters will march to the National Mall, then to the U.S Supreme Court. That means:
- 7th Street NW will be closed from the Verizon Center down to the Mall until the crowd passes.
- 4th Street will be closed at approximately 9:30 am until about 1:30 p.m. between Independence Avenue SW and Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
Around 1:30 pm, participants of the rally will march to the U.S. Supreme Court along the following route:
— North on 4th Street from the Mall
— East on Constitution Avenue, NW
— South on 1st Street, NE to the US Supreme Court
Starting 6 p.m. Tuesday, Capitol Square will be restricted to event "credentialed and authorized" pedestrians only for the president’s 9 p.m. speech.
Starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, these streets will be closed. according to the District Department of Transportation:

- Pennsylvania Avenue between 1st Street, & 3rd Street, NW
- East Capitol Street between 2nd Street, & 1st Street, NE/SE
- 1st Street between Columbus Circle, NE & C Street, SE
- 1st Street between Louisiana Avenue, NW & Washington Avenue, SW
- South Side of Capitol Square
- Maryland Avenue, SW between 1st Street, & 3rd Street, SW
