LONDON (AP) — Nicola Zagame scored four goals to lift Australia past Russia 11-8 in their last preliminary-stage game and claim the No. 1 seed out of Group B in the quarterfinals of women's water polo.
In a match between two unbeaten teams, Australia never trailed on Thursday, jumping out to a 6-4 lead in a fast-paced first quarter before the game settled down into the physical contest that was expected out of the medal contenders.
With the top spot in the group, Australia booked a place in the quarterfinals against China, the last-place team in Group A.
Russia finished second in Group B, and will play Hungary in Sunday's quarterfinals.
