A 4-year-old girl was rushed to a local hospital Thursday with a “severe” injury to her left hand after falling on a Metro escalator.

The incident happened at 11:45 a.m. at the L’Enfant Plaza station when the girl was leaving the station with her parents at the 7th Street and Maryland Avenue entrance, according to Metro.

The girl was taken to Children’s Hospital with what Metro spokeswoman
Lisa Farbstein described as “severe hand injuries.”

The escalator has been shut down while the transit agency investigates
the incident and inspects the moving staircase.

Metro urges parents to hold the hands of any children while riding escalators.
