A former volleyball coach and referee from Alexandria was sentenced to 10 years and one month in prison on Friday for attempting to entice a minor to engage in sex.

Richard Rockett Jr., 45, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Alexandria by Judge Anthony Trenga. He must serve five years of supervised release.

Rockett was convicted in April. In July 2009, he met a person he thought was a 13-year-old girl, who was instead an undercover detective, in an online chat room and later arranged to meet her for sex.

“Sexual exploitation of a child is extremely disturbing, especially when attempted by an adult who holds a position of trust,” U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride said “Today’s sentence sends a strong message: The United States will protect children and hold online sexual predators accountable.”
